It's been a minute.

It's not like I haven't been sewing. I have, actually, been sewing a lot. Finishing things seems to be the problem. I hate hemming, so there's a couple of skirts (and one shirt) gathering dust in my UFO pile for that reason. This doesn't stop me from starting on a new project, getting really close to completion then, poof! Motivation gone.

Argh.

In the midst of all this, I decided to enter my very first sewing competition: The RTW Contest on Pattern Review. There's a lot of designer inspiration out there, but the only "designer" thing that inspired me was this shirt and skirt from Fossil:

Hallie Shirt/Adrienne Denim skirt

True, they're not exactly complicated, nor would they require a great of skill to complete. I don't care. I've spent months trying to franken-pattern things with disastrous results. I want to make something simple and that would actually resemble the inspiration outfit.

Honestly, I wouldn't have even bothered with the contest had it not been for the fabric I found:

Pink/Fuchsia Print Challis

Thank you Fashion Fabrics Club. You are my hero. This fabric is rayon challis and closely resembles my inspiration photo, the exception being my fabric has clover instead of birds.  I will use Vogue 8772 (view C but with view F sleeves) for the shirt. I've made it before in chambray (one day there will be a photo) and it's really a great pattern. Very quick and easy to sew (no separate plackets to fiddle with).

For the skirt, New Look 6107 is my pattern of choice. It's also very easy to sew and required no fit adjustments. I will add length to the hem for future skirts but that is all.

I'm almost finished with both items. The skirt is finished just short of a hem (as always). The shell of the shirt is together, next up are the collar and sleeves. Hopefully, all will be completed by next weekend.

I know that I will be up against some truly creative and talented sewists (seamstresses, people who sew, etc) and that I hardly stand a chance of winning, but I want to have at least one contest under my belt. Perhaps the next one will inspire me to push myself a little more. But first, baby steps.
